Homecoming, baby fair, and Bach

Hold onto your hats, folks, this promises to be a busy weekend. Expect to see Wildcat colors in full force as alums return to campus for Homecoming Saturday afternoon. On the village green, babies and breastfeeding moms will be the focus of a Saturday morning baby fair. Sunday, the ensemble Tableau will be belting out Bach in a concert at St. Albans. All that plus contra dancing, snakes at the library, an immigration forum and more.
EVENTS
Beth Shalom of Lake Norman will celebrate Jewish High Holiday services at locations in Davidson this month. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, will be celebrated Sept. 13-15, with services in the morning, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., at the Davidson United Methodist Church Chapel and a family program and picnic from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday at Roosevelt Wilson Park on Griffith Street. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, will me marked Sept. 21-22 with evening and breakfast services. New rabbinical fellow Jeremy Gerber will be officiating at the services. Details on how to make a reservation for the special services are provided at the Beth Shalom website.
Contra Dance Carolina will host a session of lessons and high-energy dancing Friday from 7:15-10:30 p.m. at the Davidson IB Middle School gym on South Street. Lessons start at about 7 p.m. Cost is $7 for general admission and $5 for students. The band for the night will be Dennis Spring and Sons of the Full Moon, with caller Dean Snipes.
Summit Coffee on Main Street will have live and local musical entertainment featuring Erie and Me Friday and Grey Revelle Saturday. Performances are 8-11 p.m.
The annual Lake Norman Baby Fair, hosted by the local La Leche League chapter, will be held on the Davidson Town Green Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.. The free event will feature local exhibitors, mini-classes, a bake sale, free children’s activities, fabulous door prizes and more. The schedule of topics for specialist speakers at the fair main stage is as follows:
Herpetologist Peggy McKay will introduce Ralph the Snake, Frank the Frog and Stump the Box Turtle to children of all ages during a presentation and Creepy Crawly story time at the library Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
The Davidson College Homecoming football game will showcase the Wildcats against Lenoir-Rhyne, with kickoff at 1 p.m. Saturday This will be the culmination of a weekend that includes several class reunion and various festivities. The Homecoming Royalty will be announced during the game.
St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will open its “Music at St. Alban’s” concert series with Bach: All in the Family Sunday at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary. eaturing music composed by four representatives of the House of Bach, performed by an all-star lineup with Grammy award-winning countertenor Ian Howell of New Haven, Conn., and baroque cellist Gyöngy Erödi of Hungary. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. (Children under 10 free.) Refreshments will be available after the concert.
The Davidson Historical Society will host a tour of the 1904 Brawley Mansion in Mooresville on Sunday, starting at 4 p.m.. To carpool to the home, meet at Davidson Town Hall at 3:30 p.m. For information about the historical society, click on www.davidsonhistoricalsociety.org. This tour will feature a Queen Anne home located on 23 acres of woods and pastures. Espy Watts Brawley, a cotton farmer, cottonseed oil manufacturer and banker, called his home “Lawndale,” but it is now better known as the Brawley Mansion and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Davidson United Methodist Church will host “Moral Perspectives on Immigration,” a forum for both pro and anti-immigration viewpoints Sunday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary, 233 S. Main St.
Sunday sports at the college includes the Wildcats women’s soccer team facing off against Mercer at 2 p.m. on the Alumni Soccer Stadium and also the women’s field hockey team playing Longwood at 3 p.m. on the Belk turf field.
