Senate bill could aid big Cabarrus project

A bill approved by the state Senate on Tuesday could help remove a major hurdle for a $125 million mixed-use development east of Davidson in Cabarrus County.
The Independent-Tribune newspaper of Concord reports today that the Senate approved a bill that would give the City of Kannapolis the right to annex the 75-acre site and other property in northwest Cabarrus. The property is out Rocky River Road east of River Run, near the intersection of Route 3 and Davidson Road.
According to the newspaper, some residents of the Odell area have been opposing plans by developer Keith Wayne and his concrete contracting company, Wayne Bros. Current zoning does not allow the development and the county has rejected a rezoning request, the newspaper said.
