Two local students – Benjamin Huntley Justus and Elizabeth Mauldin “Betsy” Lyles – have received scholarships to attend Davidson College beginning in August.
Ben won the Davidson Honor Merit Scholarship, which recognizes exceptional personal and academic achievement.
Betsy has received the Wachovia Teaching Scholar Merit Scholarship, which is funded by Wachovia Bank and goes to students interested in teaching careers.
In announcing the awards, Davidson College said about one-fifth of students in the incoming freshman class will get a total of $1.5 million in merit scholarships this coming school year. Another $3 million in need-based grants also have been awarded. Davidson said almost half of the 465 incoming students get financial aid. And beginning this fall, all aid will take the form of grants. The college this spring decided to eliminate loans from financial aid packages
BEN JUSTUS
Ben is the son of Dr. Steven and Phyllis Justus of Pat Stough Lane. He graduated this year from North Mecklenburg High School, where he was captain of the cross country team and a National Merit Scholar. A member of the National Honor Society, Ben also was a volunteer coach for the North Meck Soccer Club, and a tutor for Amigos de Cristo.
BETSY LYLES
Betsy is the daughter of Steedman and Cissi Lyles of Concord Road and also a North Meck grad. At the school, she was active in DECA (an association that focuses on marketing, management and entrepreneurship), and served as state vice president last year. She organized a year-long entrepreneurship campaign that won her first place in a statewide competition, and seventh at the international level. She was president of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and the Interact Club, as well as founder and president of the Investment Club. Her community involvement included serving as an elder at Davidson College Presbyterian Church and organizing a benefit concert to raise money for Hands on Charlotte. She established a partnership between her church and seven rural communities in Nicaragua, and has visited those communities three times. She has done volunteer work at the Pines, and served as a tutor with Amigos De Cristo. She was voted by fellow students at North Mecklenburg High as “Most Likely to Succeed.”
