Town Day, free clinic benefit, lotso music

Davidson Town Day, which this time around will feature Weekend calendarCarolina clogging, a local bluegrass band, a bike rodeo, a kiddie train and a Bungee Run, will be the weekend highlight, running from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday on the green. Traditional events are also here including the cake walk, carnival games, and food.

Some roads downtown will be closed amid all the excitement. Main Street between Concord Road and Chairman Blake Road will be closed to cars 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., while parts of Lorimer and Concord roads will also be used for unloading and setting up booths.

Besides the fun on the Green, there’s also the Town Day Road Race early Saturday morning, a benefit dinner with music for Davidson’s free medical clinic, a youth football clinic at the college and lots of music.

EVENTS

Story hour at Main Street Books begins at 10 a.m. Friday with a focus on bugs. This event is aimed at the five and under crowd and is held the first and third Friday of each month.

Registration ends Friday for a Basic Photography course that includes digital printing techniques Monday through Friday, May 7-21 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation office. The Ada Jenkins Center’s Free Clinic of Our Towns will host a barbeque and bluegrass fund-raiser Saturday from 5 p.m. until dark at the Beaver Dam park on Davidson-Concord Road. Food will be provided by McIntosh Law Firm, and the event will feature a cash bar and a silent auction for gift certificates to local restaurants, spas and more. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for students and seniors.

MUSIC

Davidson College will host the Annual Spring Concert Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Belk Arena. The event features the Maryland-based reggae/rock band O.A.R. along with the Philadelphia-based hip-hop band The Roots, and also Ludo as the opening act. Tickets are $35 for the general public and $25 for students, faculty and staff.

Soprano Virginia Neisler will perform a concert in culmination of her voice studies at Davidson College Saturday at 7:30 at the Sloan Music Center. The free public concert will feature the works of Donaudy, Handel, Faure, Brahms, and Mozart, among others.

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will hold a Celtic worship service at 11:15 a.m., and then at 3 p.m. will feature a family concert of Appalachian and Irish music by Little Windows, Mark Weems and Julee Glaub. Admission to the concert is $10.

Classical Indian music will be the feature of a concert by violinist duo Ganesh-Kumaresh at Davidson College’s Sloan Music Center Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for seniors, and free for students under 21.

SPORTS

Davidson’s annual Town Day Road Race which helps raise money for the Davidson Cornelius Day Care Center, will start from the Village Green on Saturday morning. The 1-mile fun run starts at 8 a.m., followed by a 5-kilometer race at 8:30. Runners who pre-registered can pick up their packets and T-shirts at the green from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. Not registered yet? You can do it at the green until 7:45 a.m.

Davidson College will host a Youth Football Clinic Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until noon. The event is free to first-eighth graders. Participants will tour the college football facilities, test their skills and learn about football from college players and coaches.
