The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra performs at the first 2007 Concert on the Green April 22. Two concerts are planned next weekend, May 12-13.
Davidson’s free Concerts on the Green this summer will have a new look, becoming musical theme weekends instead of single concerts on Sundays. Concert weekends in May and June will include a Saturday afternoon concert from 3-5 p.m. and a Sunday concert from 6-8 p.m.
All concerts will continue to be held on the Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road.
The change is in part the result of a $6,750 grant from the Arts & Science Council, which has allowed Downtown Davidson Inc. to add the Saturday concerts to its lineup in May and June this year.
“We’re very excited about the change,” said Kate MacIntyre, executive director of Downtown Davidson. “That’s thanks to a grant from the Arts & Science Council. Because we have the extra money to spend, we’re able to do weekends instead of just Sunday nights.”
‘PETER AND THE WOLF’
The series continues on May 12-13 with a family weekend of performances. On Saturday afternoon, Davidson theater group the Connie Co. and members of the Charlotte Symphony will perform Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” with narration by David Mills.
Also on Saturday from 2-6 p.m., local artists will sell their work from booths along Concord Road before and during the concert.
The un-juried art sale was added in part because of the success of the recent Art on the Green festival in Davidson, Ms. MacIntyre said. A few artists are still needed to fill up the spaces, she said.
“We have room for 12 booths. They bring their own booths and tables and we charge them $15,” she said. Seven artists have signed up for spaces so far, including jewelry makers and watercolor painters. Ms. MacIntyre suggested the sale might be a good place to do a bit of “last minute shopping for Mom” before Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13.
On Sunday, May 13, The Near Misses will perform the evening concert.
