The third annual “Croquet on the Green” tournament Saturday, March 31, attracted 12 two-person teams this year, including some out-of-town ringers who won top prize.

A couple fromVirginia, Angie Williamson and Josh Cloudt, found out about the event on the Internet, and drove down to participate. “They were clearly experienced because they brought their own mallets,” said Kate MacIntyre, executive director of Downtown Davidson Inc., which presented the event. Saussy Burbank was the title sponsor.
Davidson’s foremost croquet
aficionados—Hugh Barger, William Brown, and Ed Roberts—served as referee/coaches, providing equipment for players, lining and setting the courts, explaining the “golf croquet” game format, and helping players assess their choices of shots. Befitting their status, each of the three dressed in official croquet “whites.”
