If you’re a Davidson basketball fan, you may already be biting your nails
over where the NCAA tournament committee will put the Cats. Why bite those nails alone? Join the basketball team at the college union Sunday starting at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats baseball team hosts Lafayette, the folk and blues music continues at Summit Coffee, and a pair of lectures about Islam are on tap Monday and Tuesday as students return from spring break.
MARCH MADNESS IN DAVIDSON
On Sunday evening, the big-screen TVs at the college union will be tuned to the live announcement of pairings for the NCAA tournament. The hour-long Selection Sunday show will follow the conclusion of several conference tournaments across the country.
Davidson is hoping its stellar 29-4 record this season will boost it to a 14, a 13, or best of all a No. 12 seed. That seeding sets the pairing for the first round of the NCAA tournament, which will be held March 15-18. Last year, Davidson was No. 15 and faced No. 2 seed Ohio State in its bracket. The Wildcats lost (70-62), as did every other No. 15 seed.
What are the guesses for March Madness 2007? Bracketography.com projects that Davidson will be a No. 13 seed and face No. 4 seed Tennessee. ESPN.com‘s analyst has Davidson a No. 12 seed facing No. 5 Indiana. What’s your guess?
Coach Bob McKillop has now moved into the Davidson record books for making the most trips to the NCAA tournament. However, the Wildcats have lost their opening game in the last three NCAA appearances. That means Coach McK can’t yet match coach Lefty Dreisell’s 5-4 record in NCAA play at D.
The college expects a large crowd at the union Sunday, where the TVs will be on in the Performance Hall and the 900 room. Keep your fingers crossed and remember: 64 teams, six wins to a title.
Baseball: The Davidson College baseball team (9-3 overall, 2-1 Southern Conference) will host Lafayette this weekend. The teams will play Saturday at 2 p.m. and then hold a double-header Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
Summit Coffee: Music scheduled for this weekend includes Unsung Songwriters, a pool of songwriters from the Nashville Songwriters Association International, performing Friday evening; and the Mike Strauss Trio, featuring Strauss on guitar, Scoot Pittman on drums and Jon Schigoda on the standup bass playing Americana rock with blues. Live music begins at 8 p.m. both nights. You can reach Summit by calling 704-895-0505 or by clicking here.
Looking ahead: Islamic scholar Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na-im will be giving two lectures at Davidson College as part of the Maloney Lecture series. The Emory Law School professor of Islamic Studies will speak on “Secularism from an Islamic Perspective” Monday, and “Islam, Shari’a, and Human Rights” Tuesday. The lectures are free and will begin at 7 p.m. each evening in the Duke Family Performance Hall.

I look fwd. to reading about Prof. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na-im’s lectures in future posts.
