Lent, the most holy season on the Christian calendar, is a time for reflection and penitence. It began with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 21, and concludes on Easter, April 8. In the spirit of the season, author Dorothy Bass (right) will give two free public lectures about the Sabbath this weekend at Davidson College.
Also this weekend, the college women’s lacrosse team plays its home opener, the baseball team plays a trio of games, and the “Education for All Ball” fund-raiser is on tap at the college.
REMEMBER THE SABBATH
Dorothy Bass, director of the Valparaiso Project on the Education and Formation of People in Faith, will suggest alternatives to the frenzied 24/7 lifestyle with her talks: “Remember the Sabbath…” on Sunday and “… and Keep it Holy” on Monday night.
Both lectures will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the college Union. Dr. Bass will speak on the biblical and theological heritage of Sabbath and its significance for life today. She appears at Davidson College as the 2007 Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar.
Also this weekend:
- In sports the Davidson College women’s lacrosse team will open their home season at noon Sunday hosting Oregon. The team has a new head coach, Betsy Economou.
- Also in sports, the Davidson College baseball team will host three teams in three days, playing Ohio Friday at 4 p.m., Mount St. Mary’s Saturday at 5 p.m. and Radford Sunday at 2 p.m. The Wildcats are on a roll, having swept Georgetown last weekend in the season opener – the first three-game sweep since April 2005 and a tie of the school record of 42 runs in a series.
- In music, Summit Coffee will feature live folk music Friday and blues Saturday, while the college will be hosting an organ recital Friday evening and Indian flute music Sunday afternoon. For details, see Zack Turowski’s post on this blog.
- If you’ve been itching to dance, plan to head to the college’s Vail Commons for the “Education for All” community ball. That event is also described below.
