Town hall is losing its resident techie.

Jeremy Campbell worked his last day this week as the town’s information systems director. He starts a new job Monday at a Charlotte company that he says he can’t name yet.

“It has been great working for the town. I didn’t go seeking this opportunity. Headhunters came seeking me,” he told Davidson News & Notes. “It was a difficult decision, but the professional growth afforded by the new position is substantial.”

Jeremy has helped Davidson stay out front among small towns in the way it uses technology. He’s the man behind the town Website, and he’s also one of the people who helped create PAW-NET, the wireless Internet access zone downtown. Jeremy lives on Concord Road and is married to Davidson College English and writing prof. Shireen Campbell.

With Jeremy’s departure, Joe Eshleman takes over as interim IT director, while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement search. Joe is also a college spouse: His wife, Kristen Eshleman, works in information technology services at the college.

OSBORNE PLAYS VALJEAN

Local high schooler Charles Osborne, who has been a regular on dance and theater stages in Davidson for years, has the lead in the Northwest School of the Arts’ student production of “Les Miserables” next month at the Booth Playhouse in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte.

Charles, a junior at Northwest School of the Arts, plays Jean Valjean in the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 19th century novel. The show is March 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and March 18 at 2 p.m. at the Booth Playhouse. Tickets are $15. For details, CLICK HERE>

RADIO CHANGE

If you’re a regular listener to Davidson’s classical public radio station WDAV-FM, you may have noticed a change in the schedule recently.

Program director Frank Dominguez and daytime host Jennifer Foster have swapped places – Mr. Dominguez giving up the night shift to work daytimes, and Ms. Foster taking over the evening shift.

On the station’s blog, Classical Musings, Mr. Dominguez said the idea is to give Jennifer more time to work on “The Main Street Sessions,” her program of interviews and features on local musicians, and to produce feature stories. She is recording the evening show in advance, while also working on her other projects.

“So Jennifer can prepare the evening’s music at her convenience and at her pace, which will free her up to interview and record more local musicians and visiting artists,” Mr. Dominguez writes.

A PERSON FROM HISTORY

Here’s one from the Did-You-Know file: Did you know that one of the first X-ray photographs in the world was taken in Davidson in 1896?

Dr. Henry Louis Smith, a physics professor at Davidson College, took the photograph of a bullet lodged in the hand of a cadaver. The photograph was published in The Charlotte Observer in February 1896, according to an account of the feat on the Davidson College physics department website.

Dr. Smith later went on to become president of the college.
