Summer rainbow in Davidson

Summertime and the “living is easy!” Children are involved in summer camps and programs while parents plan cool late afternoon activities and meals that involve little time in front of the stove. Recently thunder has halted many suppertime dips in the lake or swimming pools but the refreshing showers are welcome.
Dani Angell shared a beautiful photo from a few days ago saying, “We were driving home tonight and saw this amazing view of a rainbow over the Community School of Davidson (certainly a pot of gold in education). I know Davidson has had its share of rainbows, but I always find them breath-taking!” Thanks, Dani, for sharing.
Today Around Davidson shares notes from summer programs at DUMC and DCPC, a visit for Barb Dillman, a trip for Barbara Bentley and a Noteworthy Note about Election Day (yes, it is today!). Read the full story

Hydrangeas in Davidson are the prettiest we have seen in years!
It is just a matter of hours before the public schools end this academic year and parents start scratching their heads trying to decide how to keep their children occupied for the wonderful long weeks of summer. Today Around Davidson has a few ideas to consider from festivals to music camps to Bible schools.
In addition we bring news of some Davidson young people who are doing interesting things: Spencer Barnes, James Shaul, Matthew Shaw, Eloise Andry and Kathleen Elkins. Also we send birthday wishes to Jody Seymour who turned pretty old this past Sunday. Read the full story

Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam ...
Hard to believe September begins in two days and Labor Day weekend is almost upon us. Won’t it be nice to leave the 90+ degree days behind and pull a sweater out of the closet? Today Around Davidson reports on some couples who DID pull sweaters out of their closets for their travels this summer to the northwestern United States including the Cains, Millers, Stebers and Mases. We also have a report from Jeff Hassel on those huts on the lawn at Davidson United Methodist Church, and a project to bring new stoves to families in rural Guatemala. Read the full story

Cool feet on a hot day!

Whew! It is hot and aren’t we thankful for air conditioning! Maybe the best answer to staying cool is fill a washtub with very cold water and stand in it!
But we did find other ways to beat the heat. Summer camps! Today we report on Music Camp with Patty Gruce at DUMC, hear about DUMC’s Vacation Bible School, check in with Jennifer and Kristin at Fashion Design Camp held at St. Alban’s and visit with Caroline Besley spending a few days with grandparents, John and Caroline Plyler.

No more deer when Connie (left), Steve and Jean put this scarecrow to work!

Memorial Day is the traditional “Kick-off” to summer even though the calendar still reads spring. No doubt about it, with the heat and humidity, we know that summertime has arrived and our gardens are looking good! Just check out the Community Garden at the corner of Potts and Catawba to see what the hard work of Connie and Eddie Beach as well as Steve Gunn and Jean Harris and others can achieve. “Tend some, Take some, Share some” is their motto. We applaud these couples for their commitment as well as others who offer help with planting, weeding and harvesting. Read more about this garden below.
In addition, today’s Around Davidson has a fond farewell to the Swallow family (sort of) plus news of three prestigious organ scholarships for Emma Haupt, Chase Loomer and Joe Setzer. Read the full story

Shaping up to be a wonderful weekend for Town Day, Mother’s Day and Graduation Day at Chapel Hill as well as other academic institutions in our state. (Nice that Davidson College is waiting a week for a May 15 commencement.)
News today includes an opera note from local vocalist Mary Kathryn Withers, a musical note from Rachel Dyl and a Noteworthy Note about confections. Of course we promised not to include any more Royal Wedding news but just had to hear from Jane Shoemaker about her “royal adventure” in London. You will smile when you read it! Read the full story

It is Veteran’s Day. Hope that our readers will take a few minutes to join in the observance on the Town Green this morning. How grateful we are to all who served or are currently serving our country at home or overseas.
Thinking about countries overseas, Around Davidson had a chance this week to hear about a recent mission trip to the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) and the compelling reason for the trip as it involved church member Maryline Roux. Imagine leaving your mother and homeland as an infant, spending your childhood in France with extended family, marrying a dashing young American, living in California before settling in Davidson, becoming a good master’s sprinter, and finding that your church supports your dream of reconnecting with your family in Africa. This, in a nutshell, is Maryline Roux’ story, but you will want to know more. Read the full story

The beauty of moon-vine blooms on a summer evening
One has to love these summer mornings when early risers are greeted by bird songs and gentle breezes – until we must come inside and find the closest air conditioning vent to combat the summer heat.
Some are escaping the heat by enjoying four days of music camp at the Davidson United Methodist Church. Others are securing a ticket for “Noises Off,” the second summer offering of the Davidson Community Players at Duke Performance Hall. Enthusiastic readers are finding a comfortable chair to spend time with Lou Green‘s new volumes of poetry. We report on these activities today plus a Fourth of July trip for Leland Park and a just released photo of Jay Fesperman atop the winner’s podium last weekend in Colorado. Read the full story
