Coming up is Father’s Day weekend. With this date in June we recognize two important things: celebrating fathers on their very own day, and noting the onslaught of Japanese beetles to devour foliage on our tender garden plants. So to all our readers: Happy Father’s Day and happy dusting of your gardens to combat the beetles!
To recognize a special flower garden, Around Davidson spent time this week with Betsy Seymour. Anyone passing her Pine Road home is amazed at the beauty of her plants. This weekend, you can tour her yard and visit with Betsy personally. Around Davidson also catches up with Bob and Susan Manning, who recently returned from a Scottish adventure. There is also a Noteworthy Note about an annual Knox Reunion. Read the full story

Last weekend was notable for reunions at Davidson College. This was the first year planning reunion gatherings in June after the students had departed. Many returning members of the “younger” classes opted to stay in the dorms with bathrooms down the hall while others chose rooms with a private bath at area hotels.
Today Around Davidson has a few reunion notes, especially about the Class of ’61 celebrating their 50th reunion and also news of The Swimming Hole celebrating 50 years of keeping Davidson families cool when the summer temperatures sizzle. Do check out two Noteworthy Notes as well about Timothe Bittle and overflowing trash at our Post Office.

It’s reunion weekend at Davidson College so expect a lot of extra people milling on the campus, browsing in the shops and trying to stay cool. A few of these high 90s days makes one think about staying inside. Perhaps this is a perfect time to reserve tickets for the upcoming production of “Ragtime” in the wonderfully air conditioned Duke Performance Hall.
Today we visit with two members of the “Ragtime” cast, Timothe Bittle and Nyra Brannan. We also have news of travels to China by Sondra Rudy and Ginger Stell and a note about Mary Thornberry’s retirement. Read the full story

No more deer when Connie (left), Steve and Jean put this scarecrow to work!

Memorial Day is the traditional “Kick-off” to summer even though the calendar still reads spring. No doubt about it, with the heat and humidity, we know that summertime has arrived and our gardens are looking good! Just check out the Community Garden at the corner of Potts and Catawba to see what the hard work of Connie and Eddie Beach as well as Steve Gunn and Jean Harris and others can achieve. “Tend some, Take some, Share some” is their motto. We applaud these couples for their commitment as well as others who offer help with planting, weeding and harvesting. Read more about this garden below.
In addition, today’s Around Davidson has a fond farewell to the Swallow family (sort of) plus news of three prestigious organ scholarships for Emma Haupt, Chase Loomer and Joe Setzer. Read the full story

On your mark! Get set! Sneeze! It's honeysuckle...
Ah, the end of May and already daytime temperatures in the 90s! The dilemma for all of us who live under big shade trees and catch the afternoon breezes: When do we flip the switch for air conditioning? To be cool or to be green and manage electricity wisely? To be closed in, or to welcome the pollen? Honeysuckle is blooming and although we delight in the beauty of nature, the plant can kick allergies into high gear.
But moving on, we welcome race fans as this is a big NASCAR week. We also welcome a first grandbaby for Bill and Judith Jackson. In addition we have news from Peggy Evans and her family as well as Bob and Barb Dortch and their daughters, Lauren and Lindsey. Read the full story

Helping hand out commencement programs was Emma Boraks
Things could not get much busier than they were last weekend. On Saturday, the town was abuzz with activity on the Village Green, at the Davidson Farmer’s Market and along Main Street, with parents and their college children mixing and mingling with residents. Umbrellas were handy to fend off the raindrops on Saturday, but Sunday provided enough sunshine to allow Davidson College graduation to be outside under the stately oak trees. We even found a familiar face, Emma Boraks, from Davidson IB School, handing out commencement programs.
Today Around Davidson is delighted to provide an “up close and personal” report on commencement awards given to Rosie Molinary, Nancy Fairley and a diploma to graduating senior Betsy Lyles. In addition we have a catch-up report on two charitable donations from Ben Wyatt and Elisabeth Davis. Read the full story
