Fun to serve! Fun to eat! It's a no-fuss Thanksgiving Turkey!
Next week we celebrate Thanksgiving and hope that you have your turkey decorations in order because you will find nothing but Christmas in the stores. Hardly is there time to even think Halloween when ornaments, wrapping paper and artificial trees greet you at the door of every store. But Thanksgiving means family, fellowship and food. The late Erma Bombeck said it well: Thanksgiving dinners take 18 hours to prepare. They are consumed in 12 minutes. Half-times take 12 minutes. This is not coincidence. (Football fans listen up!!)
So since many of us will eat our way through the holidays, beginning right now … today Around Davidson has a few notes about food as well as news of a notable brunch last weekend when Didi Wayland was honored at Davidson College. We also mention Robert Whitton’s Saturday service. Read the full story

What would fall be without apples and cider? (Thanks to Alice Stillwell of the Pines' staff for the arrangement)

Election Day is over and now we can get on with regular activities such as the celebration of Veteran’s Day tomorrow. Meanwhile we are enjoying beautiful Indian summer weather with just a hint of frost on windshields in the morning. What a perfect time to travel to the North Carolina mountains and get apples and cider.
This week Around Davidson visited a group at The Pines making their own apple cider. We also checked in with Boo Hess whose college roommate visited Davidson for the first time. In addition we all congratulate Ashley Pickerel and A.J. Thomas who married last month. Read the full story

Bright, beautiful Halloween pumpkins are now headed for the compost pile!

November is here and the furnace is running! Quite a change from the warmer days of October. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour this Saturday evening before you go to bed. We leave Daylight Savings Time behind this weekend and are already savoring the thought of an extra hour of sleep!
Today Around Davidson brings happy news from a new grandma Anna Christy as well as a recap of the 15th Annual Book Club Tea and an interview with Nancy Lepore of Designing Brides. Read the full story

No witches in evidence today - just Halloween babies!

Ever wondered what it would be like to have a Halloween birthday? Well this year, Around Davidson decided to find out. We beat the bushes, made phone calls, asked around and came up with just four Halloween Babies. For sure there are more of you out there so please humor us with an email and we will cover you next year.
But for today, we visit with four delightful residents who trick-or-treat with added gusto knowing this day is just for them! Meet Russell Mase, Annette Kreider, Andrew Oblinger and Donna Molinek who turned another year young yesterday. Just think? In this talented group we have someone to play the piano for your party; another to provide math skills for counting your trick-or-treat candy; a third to pray for your chocolate filled tummy when it hurts; and last but not least, a dentist to encourage brushing and flossing to remove all that sugar from your teeth! What better group could one interview? Read the full story

DavidsonNews.net's David Boraks moderated Tuesday's forum for Town Board candidates: Kristin Coupal (at podium); and, from left, Jim Fuller, Rodney Graham, Brian Jenest, Mickey Pettus, Laurie Venson and Connie Wessner

What a busy week for Davidson. A large, enthusiastic crowd of students, alums, special guests, faculty, staff and friends gathered Tuesday afternoon in Belk Arena on the Davidson College campus to celebrate the inauguration of the 18th President, Carol Quillen. A short time later, another large crowd gathered in the sanctuary of St. Alban’s to hear our candidates for Mayor and Town Board present their “platforms” and answer questions from moderator, David Boraks. An informed voter is the best voter – so be sure to attend upcoming candidate forums or carefully read interviews posted on DavidsonNews.net.
Today’s Around Davidson bypasses voting issues and reports on a college mini-reunion for Anna Chao Pai, travels with Lemie and Norman Richards and belated birthday greetings for Louise Martin. Read the full story

Fall means pumpkins! The Davidson United Methodist Church sale is open on South Main. Click for info.
Today is a busy day in the life of Davidson College. Congratulations to Carol Everhart Quillen who will be inaugurated as the new president of Davidson College. She has been “on the job” since Aug. 1 but becomes official today. There is always a lot of pomp and circumstance surrounding an inauguration with a long parade of honored guests from other academic institutions. Just a shame it is being held indoors at Baker Sports Complex due to the threat of rain showers. Be sure to access DavidsonNews.net for news and photos of the proceedings.
News today from around our town includes a special fund for Emma Rae Thompson, a special petition for solar panels on the White House from Thomas Greenough and a special poetry reading by Tony Abbott. Read the full story

We are almost halfway through October. One has to be continually checking the calendar to see what day of the week it is. Lo and Behold! A quick check of the desk calendar tells us that next Monday, Oct. 17, is National Boss Day. Good grief! Better be nice to David Boraks all day!
Before plunging ahead into a weekend filled with outdoor activities, Around Davidson is taking a minute to visit with Rosemary and Ben Klein, mention a few good books and remind all about the North Mecklenburg High School pansy sale this Saturday.

Harvest decorations are everywhere - even in the back of Woodys.
The brisk temperatures of October make us want to get out of the house and visit friends during this delightful time of year – before the holiday rush envelops us. Have you noticed that we go directly from summer beach towels to Christmas gift wrap in most store displays? Even Halloween is being pushed aside to make room for bright red bows and shiny green ornaments!
Today Around Davidson decided to have fun with many photos of goings-on in our town – from bartending in Lederhosen to celebrating a bovine birthday. We mix it up further with a mini high school reunion, Boy Scout popcorn, fancy tractors, secret chickens – and finally news of Lewis Deaton and Jon Guttman who had a recent trip to NYC.
