All these eggs can be a bit overwhelming...as these young ladies in McConnell found!

brenda barger sigWhat a wonderful Easter weekend! Perfect temperatures and warm sunshine. The Saturday Egg Hunt on the McConnell Green provided fun for young and old. The Easter Sunday worship services interspersed with egg hunts for the youngsters were wonderful occasions. Now we move on to college graduations and the final weeks of public school before the much anticipated summer vacations.

Around Davidson visits today with a new baby for Abbey and Garrett Droege as well as news of an honor for Alex Kello. We also introduce you to Kay and Tim Wahl with news of their vet school bound daughter, Emily. Read the full story

Phi Delta Theta inducts Nam Young Park – at last

brenda barger sigAt last, spring break for area public schools is here with lots of happy smiles on Davidson youngsters as they relax and recharge their batteries before returning to school for a short few weeks until summer vacation. Happy smiles as well this past week for members of Davidson College’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity as they inducted Nam Young Park – just 51 years late!

We have Nam’s story today in Around Davidson as well as news of Katie Farmer who is student teaching in Germany. Read the full story

Guatemala mission, helping Japan, Fri. concert

Radishes, anyone?

Radishes, anyone?

brenda barger sigLots of homegrown lettuce and spinach leaves showing up in salads in our town and now we have radishes to add some color to our meals. Thanks to Leonard McRee for leaving this pretty bundle of bright red vegetables at our door, a memory of gardens past. Some years ago when 4-H gardens provided garden seed to all participants, radishes sprouted early and produced in great numbers. There soon were hundreds of radishes ready for market in the same week. No farmer’s market then, so what to do? Walter Herring, produce manager of the old Cashion’s grocery store made a deal with the youngsters, purchasing bundles (just like Leonards’) from the 4-Hers for five cents each. Hard work for a few dollars, but nothing went to waste. Good lessons learned.

But enough of gardening. Today Around Davidson talks to John Williamson about Bridge Camp, hears from Mike Kayes about Guatemala and has a note about Hiroe Noonan’s continuing origami project and this Friday’s Musical Interlude. Read the full story

Fresh water for Africa; report from the crawl

brenda barger sigGood news on the radio this morning that no more hard freezes are expected in our area this spring. The NC Extension Service agrees that the last frost date for the Piedmont is April 15. Go Gardening! What a treat to have fresh lettuce from our backyards or the thriving Farmer’s Market each Saturday morning behind Summit Coffee.

It was also a treat to meet so many artists last Friday evening during our town’s Gallery Crawl. Today Around Davidson has a few observations about that event as well as news from Ben Wyatt and Hayden Boyd who share a commitment for clean water in Africa. Also be sure to check Noteworthy Notes about upcoming events. Read the full story

Moving dirt to make way for our library's commemorative brick patio.

brenda barger sig
Another weekend of beautiful spring weather coming up. Hope lots of our readers will stroll the streets of Davidson and take in all the sights of the Gallery Crawl tomorrow evening. A good time to take a look at the Village Green and see the work beginning for our library’s brick patio. There will be 945 small commemorative bricks (4×8) and 91 of the larger size (8×8). With the dedication due on Town Day, we can only hope that our library branch stays open to enjoy its new patio. (And don’t forget to donate books as soon as possible for our library’s Book Sale as a part of Town Day on May 7.)

Today we have news about Red Cross Relief for Japan, Music Ministry at DUMC, a new first grandbaby for the McKillops and a few Noteworthy Notes about upcoming events. Read the full story

Miles for Marnie, vote for the Greenes, baby chicks

Spring doesn't get any better than this!

Spring doesn't get any better than this!

brenda barger sigGlad April fool’s Day is behind us and we can put the worries about a nudist colony in Davidson to rest. Bad day when the editor of DavidsonNews.net pulls the wool over the eyes of one of his employees! Now we can also put college basketball aside for another year (congrats to UConn’s Huskies) and think golf, NASCAR and baseball for months to come. In the meantime, we applaud the beauty of nature at every corner in our town. What a wonderful time of year.

A number of exciting projects are getting under way this month. We showcase two of them today. One is the Marnie Jude Foundation Day this Saturday and the second is an online vote for a new car for the Greene family. We also have an agricultural note about baby chicks and ducklings. Goodbye March; plant sale & gallery crawl previews

Remember sunshine? Warm temperatures? Maybe this weekend will surprise us!

Remember sunshine? Warm temperatures? Maybe this weekend will surprise us!

brenda barger sig
Well, let’s see. March came in as a lamb and is leaving as a damp, cold, soggy piece of mutton! The balmy temperatures earlier this month lulled us into complacency thinking grass, gardens, grills and all things outdoors. Oops! Sorry about that. Back to sweaters and knee socks – no April Fool! But we do need the rain, it seems.

Around Davidson today has news from North Mecklenburg High School about their Literary Club and the Horticulture Department’s Garden Sale. There is also an interview with Nell Landers and Russ and Nancy Gavitt who are participating in the upcoming Gallery Crawl. Read the full story

All about Henbit, new livestock & a cure for moles

Now we know the purple weed is Lamium amplexicaule!

brenda barger sigCan’t wait to get your spring garden going? Carolina Cones on Main Street in Cornelius starts its spring plant sale today (Thursday). Lots of early flowers like pansies and begonias are already available at the large home improvement stores. What else do we see sprouting near our garden plots? Fences! Seems like the critters are enjoying our produce before we do. Ideas on how to combat them? Do let us know.

Around Davidson today tells of savvy gardeners, Elaine McArn and Ann Melton, who knew what the purple weed was. We also celebrate spring in our town’s ETJ with new livestock at the Tevepaughs and Armstrongs. Read the full story

Visiting the Copeland House and poetry honors

Ah, Spring!

Ah, Spring!

brenda barger sig

Spring arrived last Sunday evening and aren’t we glad! Walking around town you are sure to be showered with pear and cherry blossoms as the March winds blow. Great weather for laundry on the line but hard on young seedlings so in need of a shower of rain. And how about those NCAA basketball brackets? Anyone in town choose the right teams for the Sweet Sixteen? Do let us know. (Afraid most of the millions of entries went into the “circular file” when Louisville and Pittsburgh lost…)

Around Davidson today visits with recently honored poet Lynn Dausman. There is also news of this past weekend’s tour of The Copeland House with the Davidson Historical Society. D.G. Martin sends a note about his Tar Heel Town visit on UNC-TV and we include a quiz for readers of this column who are savvy horticulturists. Read the full story
