Sutton-Domenge
Congratulations are in order for Homer and Catherine Sutton who traveled to France this summer for the July 5 wedding of their daughter, Elodie, to Jacques Domenge, son of Enrique and Sylvia Domenge. The civil ceremony required by French law took place in the mayor’s office in Aubeville, a hamlet in southwestern France where Catherine’s father grew up. Shortly afterwards, the religious ceremony was held in the small 12th century church in the village.
One highlight was a recording of Gounoud’s “Ave Maria,” sung by Jacques’ grandmother, Micheline Viale de Cervantes of Lausanne, Switzerland. (Although she attended the wedding, she was more at ease being the vocalist on a CD.) Elodie’s grandmother, Agathe Slawy of Nice, also attended.
Following the ceremonies, family and friends accompanied the couple to the town of Cognac about 25 miles away for an evening of dinner and dancing at the Château de l’Yeuse overlooking the Charente River Valley. The couple traveled to the chateau in a 1955 Citroën decorated with flowers. Following a reception, the group enjoyed dining first on foie gras and lobster with an interlude of cognac sherbet. Next came roast veal, cheese and the typical French puff pastry wedding cake. When the dancing ended around 3 a.m. the younger members of the wedding party continued their celebration until dawn in the jacuzzi.
A rehearsal dinner on Friday night before the wedding was in th enearby village of Mainfonds. Jacques’ mother prepared a delicious buffet which she brought from the family’s summer home in the Lot region.
Elodie and Jacques had a number of friends from Washington, D.C. in attendance. One of Elodie’s attendants was Leah Catherine Conrad, her childhood friend from Davidson. Guests came from far and wide including Mexico, Switzerland, the U.S., France and the U.K. Following a honeymoon in the Seychelles Islands, the couple has returned to their home in Washington, D.C. Elodie works at the French Embassy as an assistant to the director of the North American Office of the French National Center for Scientific Research. McIntosh 50th Anniversary –
Congratulations to Richard and Carolyn McIntosh of Davidson who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this month. After his parents, Mabel and the late H. O. McIntosh, moved from Brawley School Road to their Grey Road property in 1946, Richard grew up in the Davidson area with his three brothers, R.H., Raymond and Ruben. Carolyn is a Mooresville “gal,” daughter of the late Ray and Lottie Hager, who graduated from Mooresville High School in the same class with good friends Shirley Clodfelter and Becky Moore, all of whom married McIntosh “fellas.” (Shirley and Raymond McIntosh live in Mooresville. Becky is the widow of the late R.H. McIntosh and lives on the outskirts of Mooresville.)
Carolyn and Richard married in York. S.C., on January 17, 1958. They raised four children and now boast 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Richard retired from Transco Gas in 1993 and is known over a wide area of the Carolinas for his John Deere tractor restoration as well as for his excellent skills as a mechanic. Carolyn was a stay-at-home mom initially until working in Title I and Title VII programs during the family’s 14 years in Virginia. Before returning to Davidson in 1977, she also worked with infants and toddlers at a child development center during their three years in Georgia.
Carolyn is active in United Methodist Women and continues to help with grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and Richard can be found in the bleachers at their grandchildren’s sporting events and travel out of state to support their athletic endeavors which range from baseball to rodeo. In addition, they travel regularly to tractor shows around the country.
Richard and Carolyn’s children, Cheryl Fitzpatrick and her husband, Tim, of Mt. Mourne, Sondra Curtis and her husband, Ricky, of Mt. Ulla, Richard, Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Davidson, and Scot and his wife, Janie, of Mooresville hosted a delightful 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration for their parents on January 19, 2008. Held in the Fellowship Hall of the Davidson United Methodist Church, Carolyn and Richard sat at a head table with Carolyn’s brother, Ron Hager and his wife, Martha, and Phil Tanner and his wife, Frances. (The Hagers and Frances Tanner had accompanied the McIntoshes to York fifty years before when they married.)
Music for the occasion was provided by Steve Stout, Interim Minister of Shearers Presbyterian Church. Sondra McIntosh Curtis spoke about her mother and dad with lots of wonderful, heartwarming and humorous anecdotes. Ron Hager followed Sondra giving a tribute in words and song to Richard and Carolyn. The stage area of the Fellowship Hall held tables to seat all the grandchildren: Tim, Erin and Ben Fitzpatrick; Michael and Jodie Curtis; Sabrina, LaNell, Ashley, Janice, Brittney, Rikki and Richard, III (Trey) McIntosh; and Joshua, Zachary, Cynthia and Samantha McIntosh. Even great grandchildren, Baylee and Kaige Williams, daughter and son of Jodie Curtis Williams and her husband, Ralph, were able to attend. The rest of the hall had tables filled with family and friends, some of whom had traveled from as far as Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, to wish Carolyn and Richard well. All enjoyed a festive dinner of prime rib and chicken with all the trimmings, catered by East Mount Mourne BBQ. Following dinner, the honored couple cut the beautiful tiered wedding cake, made by Great Occasions Cakes in Huntersville, and amid much laughter “force fed” each other pieces.
It is not every day that we recognize a marriage that has endured for 50 years. We congratulate this “young at heart” couple and wish them many, many more years of “wedded bliss!” Carolyn and Richard have a few sentences which sum up what they and their family strive to live by. With permission, the words follow: “Our family is a circle of strength and love. With every birth and every union the circle grows. Every joy shared adds more love. Every crisis faced together makes the circle stronger.”
