I think Martin Luther King Jr. said it best: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” This is, in a nutshell, the ultimate reason that our journey at DavidsonNews.net and CorneliusNews.net has come to a halt.
I cannot thank enough those of you who have supported us over the years. Unfortunately that group consisted of only a very small group of our readers … about 2 percent to be precise. I never had any false illusions that all of our readers would pay for this product, and sadly, that is likely to remain true for online news in the future. However, you cannot feasibly get a quality product for free.
We worked many other avenues in search of revenue to allow our readers to continue getting a free product. Unfortunately, readers are not the only ones unwilling to pay for what we had to offer. Advertising has been extremely hard to come by from the inception of this business, even though our prices were peanuts in comparison to other publications around here.
After exhausting all our resources and trying year after year to keep things going, we’ve finally decided we can no longer do this. A business cannot run without a profit, no matter how small or large. The bottom line is, free services are not sustainable.
On top of that, we are in an oversaturated market with many other local papers, all competing for the attention and money of the same small businesses. There just isn’t enough to go around and the competition continues to grow.
That said, competition is healthy, but when you are a fairly new concept in the grand scheme of things, you are not on the same playing field as media that have been around for a long time. That’s to say, an advertiser will far more quickly and willingly spend their marketing money on something they already know than on an “unknown” product, no matter how proven the numbers or the readership.
Selling online advertising has been like trying to get people to eat Kale. They know it’s good for them, but most won’t touch it, let alone eat it.
