Traffic on I-77 southbound slowed to a crawl Wednesday afternoon after a string of minor related accidents. One person was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries, an N.C. Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Meanwhile, police seized a semi-automatic pistol from a 40-year-old Mooresville driver who was stopped on Griffith Street last Friday night. He was charged with drunken driving. And police are continuing their investigation of an armed robbery at the Wachovia Bank ATM on Main Street early Friday morning, Dec. 18.
Those and other incidents are below, along with a summary of the past week’s traffic enforcement on local streets.
3-ACCIDENT INCIDENT ON I-77
A series of multi-vehicle accidents tied up traffic on I-77 southbound for several hours Wednesday afternoon.
The N.C. Highway Patrol told DavidsonNews.net that seven cars were involved in three separate accidents. The first came around 12:30 p.m., in the southbound lane just north of the Westmoreland Road overpass, around mile marker 27.
As a state trooper was working on that two-car accident on the right shoulder, traffic backed up past Exit 28. Around 12:55, the Highway Patrol got another call about accidents north of the original scene, just south of Exit 28.
A state Highway Patrol sergeant said drivers were following too closely and couldn’t stop when the traffic slowed. Three cars collided with one another, then shortly after two others ran into one of those cars.
Nobody was seriously hurt in any of the crashes, though one person was transported to Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville with minor injuries, the sergeant said.
