A minor fire that may have started in chemicals used during a renovation project brought Davidson and Cornelius firefighters to Davidson College Saturday afternoon. Campus officials said the fire was contained and was mostly smoke. Nobody was hurt.

The fire started shortly after 3 p.m. in Cannon Hall, on Dormitory Drive, where construction workers are completing a total renovation this summer. Shortly after 3, black smoke could be seen flowing from windows on the top floor, where the fire apparently was contained.
Campus Police Chief Fountain Walker said the fire was limited to the fourth floor and may have started in chemicals being used in the renovation.
Patty Pevillo, an associate dean of students and director of residence life at Davidson College, said the dormitory is undergoing a “full internal renovation” this summer. Work started the day after graduation and is expected to be completed by the start of school in August.
She said there was no structural damage and the fire had not spread.
