Robert Davidson

Robert “Bob” William Davidson, a former Davidson College comptroller, died peacefully June 15, 2009, with his family by his side. He was 79.

Born June 12, 1930, in Mooresville, Mr. Davidson was a graduate of Mooresville Senior High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a bachelor of science in business and master’s degree in business administration.

After serving two years in the military as a crypto specialist stationed in Korea, he returned to Mooresville where he worked as an accountant for Ernst & Ernst. After that, he worked 21 years as the comptroller at Davidson College, retiring in December 1991.

He was involved in several service organizations during his lifetime and was treasurer of most of them.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mooresville his entire life, serving as an Elder, youth adviser, choir member, and Sunday School teacher. Everyone looked forward to his solos on Sunday mornings during the worship service as his bass voice would resonate through the church. He especially enjoyed the Christmas season and helping to decorate the Chrismon trees for the church.

Mr. Davidson loved life and was always ready to share a funny story. He had a wonderful sense of humor that kept everyone in his presence entertained. When anyone suggested playing a game of any kind, Bob was the first to join. He loved playing bridge and any other card games, board games, and working puzzles. If “Jeopardy” was on, he was watching.

Over his lifetime, he traveled within the United States and overseas, visiting many countries around the world. Of Scottish descent, he especially loved the times he spent in Scotland and England.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Williams Davidson Sr., and his mother, Mary Elizabeth Neel Davidson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine, their daughter Ellen Elizabeth Davidson Riefner and her husband, Scott, a brother, Clayton Williams Davidson Jr. of Mooresville, a first cousin Mary Davidson Matheson, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be Thursday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with visitation in the parlor following the service.
