Fire safety, town history, faith & politics and more

Firefighters will hold a “fire prevention week” open house Friday, archivist Jan Blodgett will speak on Davidson’s past Thursday, professors Pat Sellers and Anne Blue Wills will be discussing faith and politics Sunday, and friends of Laura Woodall will host a fundraiser Saturday.  Besides all that, there will be music and chef demos at the farmer’s market, BBQ and baked goods at the Bradford Store, motorcyclists delivering donations to the Ada Jenkins Center and, of course, pumpkins for sale on South Main.  ALSO - NOTE CHANGE RELATED TO A DAVIDSON EXPRESS CONCERT AT SUMMIT COFFEE SATURDAY MENTIONED BELOW.

Weekend of Oct.9-12

Davidson College archivist Jan Blodgett will lead a free program on “Pages from Davidson’s Past” Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Davidson public library branch. Ms. Blodgett will share documents and images from our town’s past. Participants are invited to bring their own documents, stories and questions. It’s free, but registration is requested. Light refreshments will be served. Call 704-416-4000 to register.

Live music at Summit Coffee this weekend features Bill Jones and The Pocket Thursday, the Mike Strauss Trio Friday and DAVIDSON EXPRESS (note - this is a change from the previous listing) Saturday.   Bands playing from 8-11 on the back patio (or the upstairs stage in case of bad weather).

Fire Prevention Week will conclude with an open house at the Davidson fire station Friday, 4-5 p.m.  Children and their parents are invited to visit the station, check out hte fire trucks and learn more about fire safety.

The new Davidson Farmers Market will continue Saturday, 8 a.m. - noon, offering shoppers fresh local produce and meats, baked items, flowers and more. This weekend features music by Dave Herring and the Eastbound String Machine and a chef demo by Blue Restaurant. Members of Cub Scout Pack 58 of Davidson will also be selling popcorn to raise money for scout activities.  The market will continue through the end of October and is located next to Town Hall and behind Summit Coffee.

The Bradford Store, located on Hwy. 73, will host an fundraising BBQ Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  The event will feature BBQ and a bake sale to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation.  However, the planned yard/craft sale and petting zoo have been postponed to Oct. 25 due to muddy conditions.

Friends of Laura Woodall, seen here with her daughters, will be holding a fundraiser to raise awareness for mothers facing health adversities.

Friends of a Davidson resident with ALS will host a fundraiser, the Autumn Family Fest, Saturday to help raise money and expand awareness of mothers facing health adversities. The event will run from 3-7 p.m. at the Beaver Dam park off of Davidson-Concord Road.  The cost is $150 and includes dinner catered by Market on Main in Hickory, games, adult and children’s raffles, and a Billy Jonas concert.  Proceeds will benefit A Giving Spirit Foundation, as well as MDA and ALS research efforts. There are corporate sponsorship opportunities available with more information at laurasleague@gmail.com. The event is organized by friends of Davidson resident Laura Woodall, who was diagnosed in 2006 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

A fleet of motorcyclists should be buzzing through town Saturday, on their way to deliver food and personal care items to the Loaves & Fishes Pantry at the Ada Jenkins Center.  The riders will be members of Chapter 295 of the STAR Touring Organization, also known as the Lake Norman Star Riders.  See more information in our Oct. 8 post about the ride.

For the next two Sundays, Davidson College Presbyterian Church will be hosting free evening discussions on faith and politics.  Davidson College political science professor Dr. Pat Sellers and religion professor Dr. Anne Blue Wills will co-host the sessions, which will run from 7-8 p.m. and be held in the church parlor.  They will address the definitions of “American” and “Christian” and what these definitions have to do with “civil religion.”  The Oct. 19 session will also look at how presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama use civil religious language to appeal to the American public.  Childcare will be available during both discussions.

The Great Pumpkin Patch for Missions continues through Oct. 31.  Davidson United Methodist Church members is selling pumpkins at the McKay Youth House on South Main Street to raise money for church missions. Pumpkins will be available for sale Sundays to Fridays, noon to 8 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteers needed to man the patch. Call 704-987-9949.

Wildcat Sports

Wildcats Sports this weekend features a two-day men’s tennis invitational Friday and Saturday and the women’s soccer team hosting The Citadel Sunday at 2 p.m.

The women’s soccer team is coming off of a four-game winning streak and saw its star junior forward, Kyri Bye-Nagel of Hanau, Germany, named the Southern Conference Player of the Week.  The award is her second of the season after garnering the honor to open the 2008 campaign. Overall, Ms. Bye-Nagel has won the weekly award four times throughout her three-year career.
