Frances Cochran

Frances Cochran, an artist, poet and avid reader, passed away Sept. 9 after a lengthy illness. She was 73. She was the husband of William Henry Cochran of North Faulkner Way, in the St. Alban’s neighborhood.

A memorial service is planned Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. For details …

Mrs. Cochran was born on March 11, 1935, in Richmond, Va., daughter of the late John Jay Hicks Kerr and Lillian McCabe Kerr. She attended St. Timothy’s School in Richmond,  and Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

Mrs. Cochran was known for her quick wit and generous heart. She loved to travel, and her active life included tennis, skiing, and yoga. Mrs. Cochran was also an avid reader, poet and accomplished artist, specializing in children’s portraiture. Above all, Mrs. Cochran was tirelessly devoted to her family and friends.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Cochran is survived by her children Kimberly Howland Meyer and husband David of Culver City, Calif.; William C. Howland Jr. and wife Amy of Harrisburg, N.C.; Andrew U. Howland and wife Lori of Charlotte; Scott N. Birckhead and wife Debbie of Huntersville;  stepsons Peter D. Birckhead of Houston, Texas, George D. Cochran and wife Elizabeth of East Greenwich, R.I.; stepdaughters Cathy B. Pacak of Gettysburg, Pa., and Amy G. Cochran and husband Matthew Snyder of Stonington, Conn.; niece Frances E. Klimscha of Vienna, Austria; grandchildren, Teddy, Sara, Anneliese, Will, Augie, Sidonie, Lizzie, AJ, Charlie H., Ava, Jack, Emma, Douglas, George, and Charlie S. Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death by her sister, Joan Kerr Eichner.

A memorial service will be Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 301 Caldwell Lane, Davidson. Family will receive friends at 215 North Faulkner Way, Davidson, following the service.
