4 town boards back idea of regional transit body
MEETING THURSDAYThe four-town Mayors Transportation Task Force will meet again Thursday at 6 p.m. at Cornelius Town Hall to begin work on an interlocal agreement among the towns. |
Town boards in Huntersville, Davidson, Cornelius and Mooresville all have endorsed the creation of a regional body that would allow the towns to cooperate in solving common transportation issues. The agreement was the major recommendation of the four-town Mayors Transportation Task Force, which held a series of meetings this winter and spring to study regional solutions to north Mecklenburg and south Iredell transportation problems.
Task force members, who include elected officials and citizens from the four towns, will reconvene for the first time since April on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Cornelius Town Hall. At the meeting, they’ll begin crafting the legal framework, known as an interlocal agreement, that will spell out how the towns will cooperate and share costs related to the new body.
Davidson’s Town Board on May 13 approved a resolution in support of forming a new regional transportation group.
The task force was announced following last fall’s November election. It began meeting in January, with weekly sessions at Cornelius Town Hall through April.
Davidson Mayor John Woods said Thursday’s meeting is the beginning of Phase 2 of the task force’s work. “It will be the first effort in formulating that interlocal agreement,” Mayor Woods said.
“The idea is to create groups who will focus on specific issues: I-77, planning among the fourt towns and how we coordinate that better, the North Rail corridor, public safety and issues like that,” he added.
Mayor Woods said he and other mayors are also hoping to add new members to the task force to help with the work of studying specific issues and drafting the interlocal agreement.
