Wickets and holes bring local laurels
In this special sports edition of “Around Davidson”
we bring you news of a repeat win for Douglas Clark-Brown and David Osborn at the collegiate croquet championships, plus Lynn Brickels’ golf hole-in-one.
Trophie plates are twice as nice
Davidson College students Douglas Clark-Brown (right in photo) of Davidson and his teammate, David Osborn of Charlotte, outplayed the competition for a second straight year to bring the Collegiate Golf Croquet Championship trophy home to North Carolina. This year’s contest was played at Merion Cricket Club in Philadelphia. Douglas and David beat teams from Georgetown, St. John’s, VMI, Navy and William and Mary, among others. These young men will be seniors at Davidson next year and are sure to return to Philadelphia to defend their title. However, Douglas’ younger brother, Aubrey Clark-Brown, will be a freshman at Haverford College this fall (across the river from Merion Cricket Club) and vows to have a decent golf-croquet team to compete in the Spring of 2009. We will keep you posted a year from now as to the rivalry in the Clark-Brown household and the trophy’s resting spot. (The file photo is from the 2007 win .)
Lynn Brickels Celebrates a Hole-in-One
It is what every golfer dreams about: that heart stopping hole-in-one! Lynn Brickels can now add that impressive feat to her resume. Last month on April 3, Lynn saw her 108-yard shot on the Par 3 Seventh Hole roll into the cup with just one swing of her club. This happened on the first day of the season for the Ladies Golf Association (LGA) of the Cabarrus Country Club. Lynn is one of some 20 women who play there regularly and is the co-chair of the group. For her accomplishment, Lynn earned $175. which was the current “pool” from each LGA member contributing $5. Now the “pool” begins again with $5 contributions from each LGA member waiting on the next winner.
Lynn has been playing golf seriously for the past four years after her retirement from Davidson College’s Music Department where she worked for 25 years. She and her husband, Bo, have four children and six grandchildren scattered in Wilmington, NC, Nashville, TN, Lexington, SC and Minneapolis, MN.
Congratulations, Lynn, and let us know when you score your next hole-in-one!
