Miracle run ends with loss to Kansas

One swish from success. One three-point basket in the final second that hit the rim but didn’t fall in.  That’s all the stood between Davidson making its first-ever trip to the Final Four.  The Wildcats surprised the sports world by playing the No. 1 ranked Jayhawks to the end, sometimes leading, never slipping more than a few points behind, but in the end falling, 59-57.  After one long, glorious March Madness for the little team that could, the NCAA tournament finally came to an end for Davidson.

Kansas will now join the three other No. 1 regional seeds for this year’s Final Four.  (Click here for the ESPN recap of the game.)

A drizzle fell over a hushed crowd that filed out of the college union after the final buzzer sounded, with fans shaking their heads and saying, over and over, “So close.”

But what a team!  What a season!  Star guard Stephen Curry set a new NCAA record in the first half, hitting his 159th three pointer for the season and adding three more over the course of the game.  The team’s 25-straight wins is the longest winning streak in the nation.  Jason Richards’ 293 assists is also the nation’s best.

Now the team can rest on its laurels.  Mayor John Woods is already working on plans for how to welcome the team home from Detroit so that the entire town can have a chance to say, “Thanks for the great run!”

  1. Way to go boys. It sure would have been nice to bury Charlie Scotts’ ghost but what a season. You all have burned your names forever in the hearts and minds of all of us who live here and support you. Thanks Bob for showing these young men how to have fun, stay focused and make your hometown proud.

  2. Fans are invited to welcome the Davidson College men’s basketball back to campus tonight (Sunday-Monday) around 2 a.m. The team will arrive at Charlotte-Douglas Airport on a charter flight around 1:30 a.m., and should arrive at the Baker Sports Complex around 2 a.m.

Meanwhile, students who took buses to Detroit to watch the games are due back 5-6 a.m.
