Flattery abounds for Ripley’s ‘Scapin’
Critics and audiences found a lot to like about this weekend’s production of “Scapin” at Davidson College. Directed by Scott Ripley, a visiting theater professor at the college, the show was a musical adaptation of a Moliere play.
One friend who saw the play Friday night emailed a list of friends urging us to see it. “It was hilarious - I had to get out a Kleenex to wipe my eyes I was laughing so hard. The kids loved it, too. The improvisation is amazing, and the students who play Scapin and Sylvestre will make you glad you work at Davidson, among such talent. ”
That review persuaded us to change our plans and see it Saturday night with kids and friends. It was a great evening, a reminder of why we’re lucky to live in Davidson. When can I see another? Perhaps not so soon; Mr. Ripley leaves the college after this school year.
Charlotte Observer theater critic Julie York Coppens was charmed as well. In a review published Saturday, she called it “a blast,” and said it was the “funniest show for all ages” that she or her three-year-old had ever seen. As she noted, there was a bit of foul language and some “suggestive bosom juggling.” But it was “perfectly pitched to the juvenile mind.”
Both our kids’ juvenile minds and ours.

We went to see Scapin with the kids too. The acting, timing, and energy made for non-stop fun and wit. Outstanding performances made this the best student production we have seen at Davidson. We left trying to recite and commit to memory as many hysterical moments as we could remember. When we got home, the kids googled Moliere and Scapin to find out more. (What they really wanted was a script so they could recite entire scenes like they do with Monty Python; ’twas not to be found). Kudos to all in involved and thank you for an exceptional theatrical experience.
