Deaths: Doodle Brown, 70

Smiley Brown Doodle Brown

Smiley “Doodle” Walter Brown Sr., 70, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at home on East Rocky River Road, where he lived with wife Betty Brackett Brown. He was a pilot and a retiree from Duke Power. Funeral services are Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shearers Presbyterian Church.

Born Sept. 6, 1937, in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of the late Whistle “Wick” Harrison Brown and Julia Johnson Brown. He was a 1956 graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, served in the North Carolina National Air Guard for many years, was a member of Williams Lodge, Past Master, and a member of Shearers Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Brown retired from Duke Power Company, loved to fly and was an instructor as well as a private and commercial pilot for many years.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Shearer Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Steve Stout officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville.

Besides Betty, to whom he was married 50 years, Mr. Brown is survived by sons Smiley Walter Brown Jr. and wife Doris of Davidson, Tracy Alan Brown and wife Kim of Huntersville; a brother, Harry Brown of Concord; and six grandchildren: Smiley W. Brown 3d, Catherine Marie Brown, Michael Harrison Brown, Cameron Alan Brown, Cassidy Jo Brown, and Cayla Noelle Brown.

Memorials may be made to Shearers Presbyterian Church, 684 Presbyterian Church Road, Mooresville, N.C. 28115.

  1. A great man and a great Mason. He will be missed by many. Farewell and Godspeed my friend and brother.

  2. There are not many people that I’ve known my whole life that have stayed the same as the day we met. Doodle was one of those people. I just saw him about two weeks ago on the sidewalk and we talked as if we saw each other every day. Hometown people like Doodle and Betty are hard to find and loosing them is equally as hard. Remember your roots.
