Town board changes guard Tuesday

The Town Board will have a limited agenda at its monthly meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m., where the main business will be to welcome newly elected members and honor those retiring. After 28 years in town government, Mayor Randy Kincaid is stepping down, as are board members Cary Johnston and Bruce McMillen.

Ten-year commissioner John Woods will be sworn in as Davidson’s new mayor. And the board will welcome new members Laurie Venzon, Brian Jenest and Bill Johnson, who join incumbents Margo Williams and Evan Webster.

A reception is planned after the board meeting at 8 p.m. to honor Mr. Kincaid, Ms. Johnston and Mr. McMillen. Town officials are promising “a special surprise” for Mr. Kincaid.

ON THE AGENDA

Besides the oath of office for the new members and mayor, the other major item of business Tuesday will be the election of a mayor pro-tem. That honor traditionally goes to the highest vote getter. Longtime commissioner Margo Williams grabbed the most votes in the November election.

The agenda also lists several items to be approved by, without discussion, including:

  • An amendment to add $24,056 to 2007-2008 revenues. The money was received from Provident Development as a payment toward roadwork on Bailey Road. The money had been due in 2006-2007, but was not received in time. Davidson will pay Cornelius half the funds.
  • Two items related to the town’s planned purchase of the former Baptist church on Armour Street. The board will vote on proposed financing for the deal, which is a 20-year loan from BB&T for $625,000 at an annual interest rate not to exceed 4.19 percent. The board also will approve a proposed lease with Davidson Community Players.
(See Nov. 28 item, “Town to buy church, lease it for theater.”)
  • A resolution to accept Westmoreland Road as a town street.
  • A resolution to schedule a public hearing during the Jan. 8 Town Board meeting, on a petition to annex 11308 Lauren Lane in the Royal Oaks subdivision. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

In addition, Susan Gray will be recognized as Town Employee of the Quarter. Full agenda is on the town website.
