Time to vote!
Tuesday, Nov. 6, is election day
in Davidson and Mecklenburg County, but same-day registration ends Saturday at 1 p.m. The ballot this year includes important votes for local office and the school board, along with four bonds/issues votes. See below for our election primer.
HELP! I’M NOT REGISTERED
Lucky for you, the state of North Carolina has a new program in place this fall, known as “one stop voting” that will allow you to register, or change your address, and vote. However, the deadline for this is 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4. The closest location to Davidson is the North County Regional Library, located at 16500 Holly Crest Lane (across Hwy. 73/Sam Furr Road from Target at I-77’s Exit 25) in Huntersville.
This early voting site will be open until 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday.
You will register and vote at this location, not on election day. Also, you’ll need to show proper identification, which includes your voter registration card or forms showing your current address such as a utility bill or a North Carolina driver’s license or a Davidson College student photo ID along with a document from the school showing the student’s name and current address.
WHERE TO VOTE IN DAVIDSON
Davidson has two voting places depending on where you live: Hopewell Baptist Church (Precinct 127) located at 18841 Davidson-Concord Road and Davidson Town Hall (Precinct 206), 216 S. Main St. Not sure where to vote? Go to www.meckboe.org and plug in your address to find out.
The Davidson library has information on voting, but is not a one-stop absentee voting site.
Absentee voting can be done through Saturday at 1 p.m. at most regional libraries, the main downtown library or at the Board of Elections Office (741 Kenilworth Ave., Suite 202) in Charlotte.
POLLING HOURS -
All election day voting places will be open Tuesday from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
WHAT’S ON THE BALLOT?
The Davidson ballot includes the following three pages:
- Page 1 lists the two candidates for mayor (you will need to choose one), and the nine candidates for Board of Commissioners (you will need to choose five). Candidates are listed in alphabetical order and space is available for writing in alternatives.
- Page 2 lists the seven candidates for an at-large seat on the county Board of Education (you will need to choose three), and two bonds questions. The first bond question is about authorizing sale of $516 million for various school facilities projects, including the building of a new high school on Bailey Road to serve Davidson and Cornelius, and repairs to the Davidson International Baccalaureate Middle School. The second bond question is about authorizing $30 million for community college facilities. You will be asked to vote yes or no on the bond questions.
- Page 3 consists of two questions. The first is about authorizing $35.6 million for the county to set aside land for open space uses, public school purposes, watershed protection and other such uses. The second question is about repeal of the transportation tax. Voting yes would repeal the one-half percent tax for commuter rail and other uses. Voting no would keep in place the proposed one-half percent tax for public transportation systems.
