LETTER: Vote no on transit tax repeal
To the editor: The Charlotte Observer reported recently that Charlotte commuters waste 45 hours per year stuck in traffic - that’s a full week’s vacation. The same day, our county commissioners were featured on the front page debating the half-cent transit tax. Those opposed complain about the cost overruns of commuter rail. We’ve heard plenty about these overruns, but little about the greater costs of rejecting the transit tax.
This tax funds not only new train lines but also existing bus services. If we repeal the tax, we’ll put more commuters on the roads and waste more hours stuck in traffic, breathing exhaust, endangering our health, and polluting the air. Public transportation improves quality of life for everyone. It’s good for businesses, good for the environment, and good for you. So vote against the repeal. And get a free week’s vacation and relax knowing that you’ve helped make a cooler, greener planet for yourself and future generations.
