An “empowerment walk” and a community meeting are planned Saturday afternoon in West Davidson as part of the community’s response to a June 24 home invasion and gunfire on Sloan Street.

At least two men were involved in that incident. Nobody was hurt when multiple gunshots fired from both sides, according to reports at the time.

At 3 p.m., the town of Davidson, with the support of Davidson’s African-American churches and other groups, will hold a community meeting at Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St. The meeting is a followup to one held on July 2.

Earlier in the day, Town Board candidate Lenny McAllister and COARSEE (the Committee Overseeing Achievement, Reconnection, Self-development, and Educational Excellence) have organized a community empowerment walk “to reclaim peace and safety throughout the town of Davidson.” The walk begins at 1 p.m. at Catawba Avenue and Main Street.

Both events are open to the public.

COMMUNITY MEETING

The meeting at Ada Jenkins will address the topic “how to have your voice heard,” and is among several planned in coming weeks, said Davidson Police Chief Jeanne Miller.

“The ultimate goal is to help people within communications and organizing,” Chief Miller said Friday. “We want to develop a group that has the broadest base of support of folks in West Davidson.”

EMPOWERMENT WALK

Mr. McAllister said the walk is in response to a home invasion June 24 on Sloan Street, where gunshots were fired. Nobody was hurt. “The goal of our walk is to reclaim the streets of Davidson in the name of peace, justice, and righteousness,” McAllister said in a press release announcing the walk.

In an interview Friday, Mr. McAllister said he and the organization hope to “unify the community, by putting things in place that will help make Davidson a better place.” In particular, the group wants to “uplift through education, he said.
