Town gets 2 grants for planning projects
SOURCE: Town of Davidson press release
The Town of Davidson said Thursday it has received a pair of grants to help pay for planning projects. The N.C. Department of Transportation gave Davidson $28,000, which will help pay for a bicycle master plan. And $1,500 from The National Trust for Historic Preservation will help the town design guidelines for a national historic district.
Davidson will match the $28,000 grant with at least $8,000, to hire a consulting team to work with town planners as they develop a comprehensive plan for future bicycle improvements and programs in Davidson for the coming 2007-08 year.
“We are thrilled to receive these grants so we can continue working on improving bicycle connections through town and guide development in our historic neighborhoods,” town planner Lauren Blackburn said.
The NCDOT Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and the Transportation Planning Branch created the annual matching grant program in 2004 - the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative - to encourage municipalities to develop comprehensive bicycle plans and pedestrian plans. Sixteen North Carolina municipalities were awarded grants for the 2007 grant cycle out of fifty-one municipality applicants.
The Town will advertise a Request for Proposals this summer for firms specializing in bicycle planning. Citizens interested in participating in the planning process should attend future Greenways, Trails and Bikeways Advisory Board meetings and related public workshops in the next several months.
HISTORIC DISTRICT PLAN
The $1,500 grant from the Terence L. Mills Preservation Fund for North and South Carolina of the National Trust for Historic Preservation will add to local funds to develop design guidelines for a proposed historic district.
The Town has selected a consultant who will begin working with planning staff and Design Review Board members this fall. Residents will be invited to provide input and comment at a number of public workshops as the design guidelines are developed.
The Town expects to nominate a proposed historic district for listing on the National Register for Historic Places this summer.
