Across the border: YMCA traffic
Just beyond the town border, the Lake Norman YMCA and residents who live nearby are in a disagreement over a proposal by the Y to open another entrance.
In an e-mail to members on Tuesday, May 29, YMCA officials announced a meeting June 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Y for supporters of its proposal to open a second entrance via Church Street in Cornelius. Currently, the only way into the YMCA is on Davidson Street.
Neighbors of the Y have begun organizing to fight the proposal.
In the email Tuesday, Y officials said. “The YMCA needs your help. We have a great need to offer another entrance into and out of our Y to accommodate our current membership. However, some of the neighbors are not happy about the idea and are pushing back. We are asking that anyone with an interest in improving access to and from the Y (and improving the traffic flow in Cornelius and Davidson) support us by coming to this meeting.”?
The Charlotte Observer reports on the issue this morning.
The YMCA has been studying traffic issues for some time. Among the proposals that have been floated in the past is a connection to the center via Potts Street in Davidson. But that’s not currently on the drawing board.
Davidson is also studying the whole Potts-Sloan-Beaty streets corridor through town, and is considering improvements to help improve traffic flow and provide an alternative to Main Street. That could include changes to the intersection of Potts Street and N.C. 115 near the railroad bridge. But any improvements there remain well in the future, according to Davidson officials.
