Mary Poppins, Summit music, Copperheads schedule

One sign of the annual spring frenzy of Weekend calendarend-of-school-year performances is the fact that Dance Davidson’s show Sunday is completely sold out. Even the standing-room-only tickets have been snapped up by eager parents, cameras in hand.

With the college students out of their dorms and no concerts planned for the Village Green, this will be a quiet Memorial Day weekend in Davidson. However, keep in mind music at Summit Coffee and plan to buy tickets now for upcoming local events. Plus, a new season for the Davidson Copperheads baseball team is just around the corner and will feature a few surprises…

“Mary Poppins” is one of two major productions put on each year by Dance Davidson, which was founded 1984 by Terilynne Muehleisen Knox. Dancing the title roles Sunday at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall will be Ann Sterling Dale, a high school senior from Statesville (2 p.m. show) and Brittany Harlan, a senior at North Mecklenburg High (6 p.m. show).

OTHER EVENTS

The annual Davidson College employee picnic will be Friday at noon and will include a free employee appreciation lunch for the college staff.

Summit Coffee on Main Street will host Unsung Songwriters, a collective of musicians from NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) Friday, followed by the Rick Spreitzer Trio, featuring guitar picking and harmonica harmonizing, Saturday. Performances are 8-11 p.m.

The Davidson College sports department is entering the summer hiatus as all the teams are finished but track. Five Wildcats have qualified for the NCAA East regional track meet, which will be Friday and Saturday in Florida. Qualifiers from the Davidson women’s team are high jumper Kristen Meister and distance runner Brenna Burns. The men’s team will be represented by middle distance star Doug Noreen, hurdler David Ritchie and javelin thrower Beaux Jones.

The town baseball team, the Davidson Copperheads, will open their 2007 season on the road, playing the Morganton Aggies on Monday, June 4. The Copperheads, part of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, will have on their roster this season a set of twins, Jarod and Jake Faggart, freshmen stars at Appalachian State who hail from Concord. And mark your calendars now for July 30, when the Copperheads have been selected to play the Chinese National Team in Davidson. ??????
