WEEKEND: Croquet, Egg hunt, tennis
Did you realize croquet is a hidden specialty
in this town, which has its very own Davidson Croquet Club? If not, come learn all about it Saturday morning downtown, where you can watch or play in the town’s 3rd annual croquet tournament on the green. Sunday you’ll need to dig out your Easter basket and head to North Mecklenburg Park for an awesome egg hunt. Also this weekend, don’t miss the Davidson College dance ensemble, college musical performances and a last chance to watch the on-fire Wildcats women’s tennis team on their home court. Oh - and a couple of late additions: An all day reading of “Paradise Lost” is planned Saturday at the Carolina Inn on Main Street. Also Saturday, it’s opening day for the Lake Norman Art League’s spring show, “Lake Norman Postcards,” at 108 South Main St., next to the Village Store, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
EVENTS
Saussy Burbank will sponsor the third annual Davidson Croquet Tournament Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. on the village green. The event is open to players of all levels, including first-timers. Dancers from Dance Davidson will entertain with a selection from their upcoming performance of “Alice in Wonderland.” Teams of two will compete in Golf Croquet, a game popular in Great Britain and Canada. Assisting with the tournament will be members of the Davidson Croquet Club and croquet students from Davidson College. The green will be set up with four courts. A typical game takes 20-30 minutes. Lunch will be provided, along with a T-shirt. Individuals may pre-register for $25.
Enjoy a variety of dance - from Chinese to Bulgarian to hip hop - performed by over 160 students at the Davidson Dance Ensemble spring performance Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $4. Click here for a complete preview of the show.
Sunday is Palm Sunday, the kickoff to the Holy Week of Easter, which will mean classic hymns and the waving of palms at most local Christian churches.
One of the top egg hunts of the area is the North Mecklenburg Eggstravaganza, which features hundreds of eggs waiting to be gathered according to age divisions (for ages 10 and under) at North Mecklenburg Park. The free egg hunt will begin at 3:15 p.m., but there will also be a petting zoo, face painting, clowns, inflatable gyms and more. You’ll need to bring your own basket for collecting eggs. The park is located at 16131 Old Statesville Road and festivities will run from 2-4 p.m. The event is sponsored by recreation departments from Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville.
Sunday evening will feature two college musical events: the one-woman musical drama “An Evening With Madame F,” along with the spring performance by the Davidson College Chamber Singers. Click here for a listing of all the music events this weekend.
