WEEKEND: Big Game parties, Shakespeare, music

Super Bowl XLI in Miami on will feature Lovie Smith’s Bears facing off against Tony Dungees’s Colts. The game will be Sunday on CBS-TV, but two local Super Bowl parties will be held Saturday:

  • The Saussy Burbank Souper Bowl III will feature a soup cook-off, silent auction and musical entertainment, all to benefit the Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS program which provides emergency home repairs for low-income homeowners in Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville. The event will run from 12 - 2 at the Lilly Family Gallery, Chambers Building, Davidson College. Advanced tickets are $10 adults, $8 students, $4 children (12 and under) Prices increase at the door.   • The Habitat for Humanity Madden Bowl will feature a video game tourney, foosball, pool, games and food from 4-7 Saturday at the Molly McKay Youth House, located across the street from Davidson United Methodist Church, on South Main Street. This event will raise money for the 2008 Youth Habitat Build. Tickets are $10 for tourney play and $5 for non-players. Contact Shonda Miller at 704-896-8957 (ext. 1120) for more information.

  • Green Ball - Davidson College will host a contra dance with live fiddling Friday evening. This is a benefit for the Davidson Lands Conservancy, and is covered below.
  • Sports - Also on campus, both the men’s and women’s Wildcat basketball teams will host home games Saturday. The men will seek to defend their place at the top of the Southern Conference starting at 2 p.m. against UNC Greensboro, while the women’s game will follow at 6 p.m. against Western Carolina.   • Music - Summit Coffee, on Main Street, will feature the contemporary Celtic group The Merrons Friday night, followed by folk music from Alt-Ctrl-Sleep and the Pregnant Preachers Saturday. Music starts at 8 p.m. both nights. More on the Summit Website, CLICK HERE>
  • Shakespeare events - The Royal Shakespeare Co. will be performing three plays this month at the college, and has scheduled numerous related free events including Saturday evening’s “Elizabethan Texts and American Composers.” This event features Davidson musicians Diane Thornton, contralto, and Ruskin Cooper, pianist, performing, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sloan Music Center. HELP WITH RSC SHOWS

And speaking of the RSC, we received a notice the other day in search of Wardrobe Support volunteers for Royal Shakespeare Company performances at Davidson College. Volunteers will help with pressing, laundering and some minor stitching of costumes, through February 18th. Interested? Call Jim Nash at 704-607-0196.
