Police have identified the driver who collided with another car at Concord and East Rocky River roads last Thursday as a 29-year-old Mooresville man. Also in this week’s blotter, reports of a dozen speeding citations on Griffith Street, five citations for running a stop sign on Jetton Street, and reports of auto break-ins near Exit 30 and in the Davidson Pointe neighborhood, across the Iredell County line. Already the middle of July? Hard to believe the summer is passing so quickly. Many of our younger residents have been to camps near and far. Next week Around Davidson will report on Vacation Bible School and Music Camps in our community. Today, however, we have news of BoyScout Troop 58’s week spent at Camp Grimes.

Editor’s Note: Michele Miller Houck recently accompanied a youth group from Davidson College Presbyterian Church on a mission trip to learn about urban poverty and engage in advocacy for the poor. Participants flew to New York City and then rode a train down the East Coast, with stops in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Michele provided the following account.

Early on a Saturday in June, I left Davidson with 12 youth and 5 adults from Davidson College Presbyterian Church to join a trip focused on understanding and empathy. As we made our way from New York to Baltimore and Washington, our eyes were opened to the issues of urban poverty and homelessness. Nine days later, we returned to Davidson tired, but energized to make a difference. Read more »
The planning concept for the mixed-use parking deck as presented in Tuesday’s Town Board meeting looks at first glance to cover the town’s parking need for commuters and shoppers in a functional and attractive way. (July 15, “Parking deck/office building proposed downtown.”) I am concerned, though, that the concept as presented does not seem to give adequate consideration to the character and future of the Davidson Farmers Market which the parking deck would displace. On its sixth try, and with weather in Florida cooperating, NASA launched the Space Shuttle Endeavour shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday. The flight will take the Shuttle, and Davidson grad Tom Marshburn, a mission specialist, to a rendezvous with the International Space Station on Friday. Read more »
We Davidsonians love our farmer’s market. Just take a look at the size of the crowds that come downtown next to Town Hall every Saturday morning to buy fresh produce, meats, flowers and more.
